History of hatch house

Built in 1888, the Hatch House Victorian is one of Paso Robles’ earliest and most cherished residences. Originally home to the Hatch family — among the area’s early settlers — the house has witnessed the town’s transformation from a quiet ranching community into the vibrant wine country destination it is today.

Each renovation has been done with care to preserve the home’s original craftsmanship — from its intricate wood details and tall windows to its steep, narrow staircase and classic Victorian layout. While the world outside has changed over the past 130+ years, the Hatch House remains a timeless symbol of Paso Robles’ heritage and enduring charm.

Today, this historic gem welcomes guests from around the world to experience a piece of local history — offering the warmth of the past, blended beautifully with the comfort of the present.

From Heartland to Golden State: A Memoir from Hatch House Granny

Well, hello there, dears! It’s your Hatch House Granny, and I thought I’d share a little story about how I ended up in this lovely Paso Robles cottage.

Six years ago, my dear husband passed away, and I found myself all alone on the outskirts of Ashland, Ohio. It was a quiet little spot, often called the "middle of nowhere." Winters were harsh, and there were days I couldn’t even get out of the house until the snowplows cleared the roads.

By Christmas of 2021, I had had enough of those long, cold Ohio winters! My daughter-in-law and I got together and hatched a plan — why not buy a house in sunny Paso Robles, California, and turn it into a little Airbnb adventure?

The plan was simple enough: pack up my furniture, rent a U-Haul, and have my son fly in to drive me across the country. Flying wasn’t an option for me — my sweet cat Andy, and my elderly dog Manny needed to come along.

Oh, dears, poor Manny’s health took a turn just a week before our trip, and we had to say our goodbyes. That was a tough one.

When my son arrived from the San Francisco Bay Area, we went to pick up the U-Haul — but instead of the small 15-foot truck we reserved, they only had the giant 26-foot trucks available. So, I hopped in with Andy and all my belongings, and off we went in our colossal truck and full-sized car trailer. Driving 43 feet of metal across 2,300 miles? Let’s just say my son had his work cut out for him!

Andy, of course, was not pleased about the journey, filling the truck with his pitiful cries, only taking short naps and potty breaks that sometimes smelled worse than the Ohio winters.

After four long days, countless gas stops, and 2,300 miles later, we arrived safely in Paso Robles, California.

And now, here I am — settled into my cozy, remodeled cottage with Andy by my side, managing our little Airbnb adventure at  Hatch House Victorian.

From the snowy heartland to sunny California, it’s been quite the journey, dears — but one I wouldn’t trade for anything!

We had a wonderful time staying at Hatch House. A reminder of a bygone era that this world is in much need of revisiting. I saw so many things in the decor, architecture and details like glass door knobs that I hadn’t seen since I was a kid. It brought back lots of great memories and we made some of our own memories at our wonderful stay thanks.

Beautiful home within walking distance to all sorts of restaurants and shops. We felt safe and comfortable and admired all the beautiful features of the home. It was a hot weekend but the central air kept us cool. Definitely coming back someday soon.
